Sigourney Savages: Boy's Golf: State Participation

I wasn't able to find out as much about Golf as I wanted to.  To my knowledge the Boy's Golf team qualified for the State tournament as a team in 1985 & in 2019.

Sigourney Savages: Volleyball: State Participation

To my knowledge the only Sigourney Savage Volleyball player to ever be named All State is Jordan Carter who was named in 2014 & 2015.

Sigourney Savages: Baseball: State Participation

To my knowledge Sigourney Baseball has never made the state tournament although they've had some very good teams over the years.  The following have been named All-State

Chris Coffman 1991

Andrew Utterback 2010 & 2011 - I have to interject something here.  Andrew lived across from my Dad for years.  We always saw that kid out in the yard working on something.  Whether it was batting or fielding or pitching, he had a dedication like I've never seen before.  Some kids just have it.  Some are just natural athletes & Andrew did have a tremendous amount of talent.  Yet he combined that talent with an enormous amount of hard work.  I watched it first hand.

Matt Meier 2010

Sean Sellers 2011

Avery Moore 2017

Peyton Crawford 2015-2016

Carson Crawford 2018

Josh Mohr 2020

Cade Molyneux 2020

Sigourney Savages: Boy's Basketball: State Records

Unfortunately this one is short and sweet.  Although Sigourney Basketball has had some highlights throughout it's history, it has most certainly been in the overall spectrum Sigourney's weakest sport.

To my knowledge the only Savage Boy's Basketball player to ever be named All State was Vaclav Bujnoch in 2017.

Sigourney Savages: Girl's Basketball: State Participation

To my knowledge the Sigourney Savages Girl's Basketball Team has made the State tournament twice.  Once in 1921 where they went 0-2.  A first round loss to Mount Ayr 17-13 & then a first round consolation loss to Roland 14-8.   They Made the state tournament again in 1992, with a first round loss to Colo-Nesco 93-64.

The Following Sigourney Savages have been named All State in Girl's Basketball.

Thea Hollingsworth 1972

The first team state title that Sigourney High School won was in Cross Country in 1942. The Savages followed up with another title in 1943 & then won again in 1969.

Ray Shaver to all records I have found was the first individual state champion in anything for the Savages. He won the 1 mile with a time of 4 minutes & 55 seconds.

Theo Kephart won the State title in Pole Vault in 1946 (Didn't even know Iowa ever had the sport!!)

Phil Michel Won the 1947 50 Yard Dash State title (Believe he's related to 2 time Discuss champ Katie)

Bill Deitrich won the 1954 State title in the 440 Yard Run

Kerlin Steinmetz won the 1954 State title in Shotput

Rex Appleget, Kerlin Steinmetz, Earl Northup & Ben Bales won the 1954 Relay State Title

Greg Greiner won the Shot Put State Title in 1987 & 1988

Sigourney Savages: Girl's Track: State Champions

Adam Sellers dedication and hard work towards putting together all of the information he could find on Sigourney-Keota Football & displaying it on a facebook page thoroughly impressed me.  It was a real treat getting to learn new facts & stories as well as reliving ones I already knew.  The history of the football program was exciting, fun and informational.

Anyone that knows me or even people that don't know me but have heard of me are well aware of my obsession (some would even call it a fixation) with wrestling.  I've researched and written about all of our state champions, state place-winners & finishes as a team at the state tournament over the years.  I'd love to know all of our state qualifiers as well as our district qualifiers and top three place-winners year in and year out at the South Iowa Cedar League (SICL) conference.   Today I did some more research on Sigourney Savage sports and came across a ton of information.

Rather than post about all of it at once, I decided I would do it sport by sport.  This is only at the state level & it only involves state champions.  Like with wrestling, I'd love to find out more.  I'd love to find out as much as I can.  The history of Sigourney, in anything interest me.  However all I was able to find was State champions.

Forgive me as I will interject a personal anecdote here and there.  (For my own records)

SAVAGE GIRL'S TRACK

Team State Titles were won in 1990, 1991, 1992 & 2017.

On an Individual Level....

Bridget Seip won the 1 mile State title in 1976 with a time of 5 minutes and Three seconds - My Dad raced Motorcross with Terry Seip back in the mid 70's through the early 1980's.   I remember my Dad talking about how good of an athlete Bridget was.

In 1982 Terri DeWeese, Tami Bunting, Tammy Conrad and Twyla Green won a rely state title.

In 1987 Sherry Conrad, Ginger Beasley, Heather Garrett & Stacey Garrett won a rely state title. - My Aunt Shirley dated Larry Garrett (Heather & Stacey's Dad) from I want to say 1993-2005? I could be wrong on those years.  Anyway they lived together & I referred to Larry as my Uncle for years. Want the truth? I still refer to Larry Garrett as my Uncle. He was very good to me growing up. Think a lot of him. Always have.  Anyway, I can remember him showing me all of Heather and Stacey's medals/pictures/accomplishments one day when I was over at there house. It was really cool.

Sadie Wiley won State titles in the 200 Meters (I believe Hurdles?) in 1988, 1990 and 1991.  Speaking with her brother Jonathan Stichter, I think she took 2nd or 3rd in 1989.  Ran NCAA Division I track at Iowa, but I believe suffered quite a few injuries.

In 1990 Heather Eiben, Brandy Page, Sadie Wiley & Rhonda Eiben won two separate Medley State titles.

Also in 1990 a Relay State title was won by Nicole Hammes, Angie Billman, Jen Arduser & Heather Eiben)

Rhonda Eiber won 100 meter state titles in 1991 & 1993.  She won both the 200 meter & 400 meter titles in 1992 & 1993.

Katie Michel won Discuss State titles in 1991 and 1992.  (Believe her Dad was a state champ too)

Heather Bombei won the 1992 800 meter State title - That fall I was selling something for Boy's Scouts.  I can't remember what.  We went around the neighborhood.  We stopped at the Bombei house.  While we were in the house talking to the mom & Dad, this girl came in breathing heavy as if she had just got done for a run.  I imagine that had to have been Heather.

Autum Barthelman won State titles in 2017 & 2018 in the 100 Hurdles

Summer Barthelman won the 400 hurdles in 2017

Summer Barthelman, Autum Barthelman, Sloane Magil & Leah Carter won the Shuttle Hurdle relay in 2017 & 2018.

To me knowledge this is all of the State champions Sigourney has had in Girl's Track.  If any errors or information to be added please let me know. If any names are misspelled, please let me know. This information will be corrected if incorrect.  Thank you.

SICL (South Iowa Cedar League) An Incomplete History

I competed in the South Iowa Cedar League (SICL). I competed as a wrestler & yet as much history as I know about many things, I know very little about the history of the conference I competed in.   What I set out to find today was as much information on SICL wrestling as I could. I'd love to know all of the team champions.  All of the top three place-winners year in & year out at each weight class.  I'd like to know when the first SICL wrestling tournament took place.  I'd love to know all of that.

Not just wrestling either.  I'd like to know anything and everything I can find on SICL.  There's not much out there.  However I was able to find some stuff that I never knew.  Some stuff that shocked me.

I found some records that indicate that SICL began in the 1935-1936 season but other records state that SICL began in the 1929-1930 season.  From what I have been able to gather & what I have been able to find, it began as a way for the boy's basketball teams of Belle Plaine, Brooklyn, Montezuma, Tama & Toledo to have games & an official champion.

Brooklyn soon became BGM as we know it today.

Believe it or not Cedar Falls joined in 1930-1931 but would only stay through the 1935-1936 season.

Iowa Valley joined SICL in the 1936-1937 season.

Sigourney joined in the 1951-1952 season.

Then it remained those 7 teams up until 1961-1962 when both Tama & Toledo left the conference. (This may have been when South Tama High School was formed.)

At the departure of Tama & Toledo, SICL gained Williamsburg.  Then shortly after that in the 1962-1963 season Keota, English Valleys & HLV joined.

Tri-County would join in the 1986-1987 season.

North Mahaska & Lynnville Sully would join in the 1996-1997 season.

Williamsburg would leave after the 1999-2000 season.

Colfax-Mingo would join in the 2015-2016 season.

I believe team wise that is the entire history of SICL.

I realize that there isn't much here but it's more than what I ever knew up until today.
