Top 4 things I love about Iowa

4. Iowa's Beauty
As a public relations and communications specialist for Iowa One Call, I travel all over the state on a regular basis. Many people have a misconception that Iowa is, "Nothing but corn and soybean fields" and I blame that misconception on where interstate 80, 380 and 29 run through Iowa. Iowa is so much more than simply fields of corn and soybeans. It has beautiful landscape that is truly breathtaking in the fall and in the spring. You have to take county highways and go "the long way" to see some of it but it is out there.

3. An appreciation, love and passion for wrestling
Growing up in the state of Iowa, you take for granted how big the sport of wrestling is here in this state. While it still takes a backseat to football, it is every bit as popular and well known as basketball and in many areas throughout the state more popular. As an Iowan, you don't realize and appreciate Iowa's love and passion for wrestling until you visit other states. In some states wrestling is as popular and well known as is high school tennis here. I love hearing people from other states come into Iowa and say, "I cannot believe how popular wrestling is here."  As is football to Texas, wrestling is a part of Iowa's culture.

2. Pioneers of Liberty
If you go through and study the history of Iowa, you will discover that Iowa has been a pioneer and a leader in civil rights. The first female to ever be accepted into a university was at the University of Iowa. The idea that our youth deserves a high school education, began in Iowa. Iowa was one of the first states to allow interracial marriage and the third state to allow homosexual marriage. The facts and statistics go on and on. Iowa has been a state that has continued to push for liberty, justice and equality for all and that makes me very proud to be an Iowan.

1. A Rich and Interesting History
Sure, Iowa pales in comparison to places like California but there are still a lot of really neat people that have come from Iowa. There are a lot of really interesting things that happened in Iowa as well. Athletes, actors, writers, inventors, you name it, Iowa has produced some of the best. Jay Berwanger, first ever Heisman Trophy winner is from Iowa. Si Roberts, first ever African-American NCAA champion, is from Iowa. I can give name after name of people that were born here, grew up here or went to school here.  Want to talk about interesting and intriguing things that happened in Iowa? I can talk your ear off about that too. Iowa has a very rich and interesting history.
